Lothar-Günther Buchheim - Author of the Novel

Lothar-Günther Buchheim was a war correspondent during the Second World War with the rank of naval second lieutenant. His experiences there drove him to record his testimony in the form of a novel, but DAS BOOT is not a work of fiction. The author has actually experienced the events related in the book; they are the sum of his experience whilst aboard submarines. Following its publication in 1973, DAS BOOT became an international success, and made its author, born in Weimar in 1918, world-famous.

After completing his higher education certificate, Buchheim studied at the art academies in Dresden and Munich. Buchheim is not only an author, but also a painter, publisher photographer, and collector of written works, and he has hit the headlines over the past few years with his "Museum der Phantasie“. Amongst many awards he has collected, Buchheim recieved the Bundesverdienstkreuz in 1983.
